Crackling sound during playback

I've just started recording music with Audition and I'm having a bit of an issue that I'm hoping is fairly common. I've searched a bit, but haven't found what I was looking for. When I play back multiple tracks in the multitrack view it gives me crackling and sometimes cuts out completely. I get the same if I mixdown all the tracks.

Equipment:

====================

Alesis MultiMix 8 USB 2.0

Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Creative Labs Soundblaster X-Fi

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66Ghz

8GB Ram

Primary C: 544GB Free

Secondary F: 1.22TB Free

Adobe Audition 3.0

  • When I record using the Alesis mixer I have no issues.
  • When I play back each track individually in the Edit View area I have no issues
  • When I play back all tracks in the Multitrack view or try to mixdown the tracks I get crackling and sometimes the sound completely cuts out.
    • I get this through my on board Realtek sound card
    • I get this through my Creative Labs sound card
    • I get this through my speakers
    • I get this through headphones

I'm using the Creative ASIO driver, but I admit I'm new to recording via computer so maybe I'm missing something silly. My Audio Hardware Setup is shown below. I tried setting the ASIO Buffer Latency to 300ms to raise the sample rate, but that didn't help.

I tried raising the cache size thinking it didn't have enough.

I also raised the Peaks Cache.

I'm sure in my newbie-ness I'm missing something stupid and would really appreciate if anyone had any good advice on what I might do to troubleshoot this issue. It's making me nuts.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.
